What is the Design Process When Hiring a Interior Design Professional?
Most of my Rochester, NY and Monroe County clients come to me when they are looking to update their homes to give them a refresh and change design styles. They are usually looking to work with some of their furnishings while changing others and creating a coordinated look. Homeowners often need more time to create their ideal home atmosphere due to differing opinions or design styles between partners/spouses. The flow isn't right in their home, there are functional issues, or most don't know where to begin. My favorite clients are those who have no interest in interior decor and trust me to run with the design. Others are looking for guidance. My signature design process ensures that I overlook no details and maintain professional standards. Read on to learn more about my design process for interior design. Read on the learn what are the main phases of interior design process.

My Interior Design Process: (Up to) 7 Phases
If you've ever watched HGTV or any other home makeover show, you've noticed that each show follows the same format. While only some of the phases of full-service interior design make it to air for the sake of time, you'll be familiar with most of these phases.
Drawing from my studies at Michigan State University and interactions with other designers, I have crafted a personal signature design process. Every step is necessary to create a polished design, with the initial developmental stage of being the most crucial.
According to the New York School of Interior Design, they outline 13 phases of interior design process. While each firm has it’s own procedures, some of these 13 stages may overlap when they are condensed down to 7 phases. Here is what Ellen S. Fisher says to expect,
“1. Initial Interview. | 2. Contract | 3. Information Gathering | 4. Additional Follow-up | 5. Program Development | 6. Analysis and Ideation | 7. Schematic Presentation | 8. Refining | 9. Design Development Presentation | 10. Contract Documentation | 11. Contract Administration | 12. Installation | 13. Aftermath.”
Let me walk you through each stage so you can understand what's in store. Then, I go into further detail about each phase.

How much does an interior designer cost?
My fees are $100/hour. I often create a hybrid flat fee/hourly rate for my clients based on how long I anticipate taking for their project. An average room takes about 40-60 hours. A flat fee is transparent without additional charges, though taxes will apply. The flat-fee rate applies to everything through the final design. After the final design is approved, the hourly rate takes effect.
A 100% retainer is required at contract signing. You decide how much you want to spend on the furnishings and decor budget ahead of the design phase.
If I am ordering for you, 100% of the furnishing and decor budget is due when the design is approved.
You can view the videos Interior Design Fees Explained and The Design Fees Breakdown, created by Space for Edit.
NOTE: There are several items to keep in mind regarding the grand total of the budget, in chronological order:
The design service fee (in N.Y., I must collect taxes for this). Who is involved: you and your designer.
The product budget (furnishings and decor). Who is involved: you and your designer. Your designer works with her showroom, vendors, or buying group.
Architects fee (If applicable to your project.) Who is involved: you hire and contract with the architect. The designer may be involved with the architect as a consultant.
The construction budget (trades such as contractors, painters, etc., plus the cost of materials) Who is involved: You hire your own general contractor, as that is a separate contract.) If applicable to your project. The construction or trades budget can only be determined once the contractor has the final design plans. If you skip ahead and hire the contractor before the designer, you may find that your contract with the G.C. is limited, and he/she will charge extra. Be sure to have your final design plans before discussing the budget with the G.C.
Taxes, fees, and delivery. (Shipping may apply to your orders, and a charge by the designer to store them in her warehouse. Most designers use white-glove delivery services. The taxes, fees, and delivery are often lumped together or hidden in your total purchase order.)

2. Step Two of the Interior Design Process: The In-Home Design Consultation
Prerequisite
Design Questionnaire (Required). The link to the questionnaire form will be emailed or texted to you.
What to Expect during your first on-site consultation with your interior designer
For the next step in my design process for interior design, I will tour your room to gain an understanding of the design and functionality goals that you have. You can also tell me anything you don't like about the current setup and areas of difficulty.
In conjunction with my design survey, this consultation will allow me to become acquainted with you and the others living with you. I must comprehend your hobbies, the operation of your home, and how you like to arrange things in it so that I can build a design plan. To produce a specially tailored plan for all of you, it's paramount that I learn as much about your family as is feasible. I might ask questions related to your lifestyle and how the space would be used by you. Furthermore, there may be certain restrictions or special instructions that need to be regarded when developing the room's design; such information will also surface during this discussion. After that, I shall measure the room and snap photos for further reference. Subsequently, the designer will present a letter of agreement and a contract and discuss monetary arrangements. When this meeting concludes, implementing the next phase of the process can begin.
This is also a great time to ask questions about your designer's experience and qualifications.
During the initial consultation, it can be like a job interview. The designer may wish to wait to do the site survey until after signing the contract; he/she may bring people to assist in measuring and taking pictures of the area.

Your Time Requirement for the initial design consultation:

Consultation: On-site

An in-home consultation by Julie Ann Rachelle Interiors LLC is $300; if you move forward with employing me, then $100 will be taken off the Design Fee outlined in the contract.

What to expect during the design development phase
To create a unified design, measurements are taken of the space. A color scheme is chosen, and a 2D plan is developed. Furniture and artwork are then selected based on calculated dimensions and consultation results. All design aspects must be decided upon before proceeding with an individual element.
To get the project off to a great start, we'll create a shared Pinterest board. A mood board will bring clarity to your vision and spark creativity as the design process unfolds.
Your budget and goals are important factors contributing to your home design development. I strive to provide a design that reflects your preference while staying within your budget.
During the planning phase, experts analyze your needs and wants through visits, research, and surveys. They consider factors such as space usage, occupancy rate, furniture, fittings, and lighting to finalize the design.
You can expect the following during the design development phase from me
Dimensions of the site
Detailed surveys
2D space plan

It is crucial to be upfront about your likes and dislikes, which I expect as a professional, and will never take personally, I may explain my decision and offer why my option is the best for the overall vision, but in the end, you are the one who has to live there. Honesty on your part(s) is a must. I will go back to the drawing board with up to two revisions to get the design to be precisely what you hoped for or better. I have always satisfied every customer. During the final design phase, the design will be refined while adding details.

Professional photography to take place within several days of installation
Your Time Requirement For Implementation Phase
Installation: This may take a full day up to five days depending on the scope of the project.
NOTE: You will be asked to leave for entire time period in order for the experience of the big reveal. The reason of asking clients to stay away from the site is for safety. What is the difference between traditional interior design services vs. online interior design services?
Interior design is a fascinating and ever-evolving field, and today the consumer has more options than ever when it comes to deciding how to decorate a space. Two increasingly popular options are traditional interior design services and online interior design services. But what is the difference between the two?
When looking at traditional interior design services, you are often paying for the expertise and experience of a trained professional. In-person services provide access to an experienced designer who can walk you through all the options from wall colors to furniture styles to materials used. You can expect your designer to have a wealth of knowledge on the subject, and they will be able to offer advice tailored to your specific style, needs, and budget. Traditional services may also come with access to a wider range of furniture, fabrics, and other materials that may not be available through online services.
On the other hand, online interior design services are becoming increasingly popular due to their cost-effectiveness, convenience, and accessibility. Most online services allow customers to upload photos of their space, get feedback from an experienced designer, and even purchase the necessary materials and furniture. There is usually a wide variety of options to choose from, and you can often expect a much faster turnaround time than with traditional services. Additionally, some online services offer virtual consultations or ‘virtual shopping trips’ so you can get the same one-on-one attention from a designer that you would expect from traditional services.
Ultimately, the choice between traditional and online interior design services comes down to what you need from your designer and what fits your budget. Traditional services are great for those who want to consult with an experienced designer for a more customized look, while online services can provide a more cost-effective and convenient option for those who may not have the luxury of scheduling in-person consultations. However, both services ultimately have the same goal -- to create a beautiful and functional space that you'll love for years to come. Read more: The Ultimate Cheatsheet for Traditional Vs. Online Interior Design
What do interior designers do?
Interior design is a complex, creative profession that requires an understanding of spatial awareness, color theory, and artistic intuition. It’s the art of transforming a space into an aesthetically pleasing reflection of its inhabitant’s lifestyle and personality.
Interior designers are responsible for creating a space that is both functional and attractive. They must take into consideration the size and shape of a space, the materials that are available, and the homeowner’s taste. Using these elements, interior designers create a unique atmosphere for the space either from scratch or by renovating a preexisting structure.
The job of an interior designer does not end at decoration. They must also consider the impact their designs have on the environment and ensure that all materials used are sustainable and safe. It is their responsibility to make sure that the space is well-lit, easy to navigate, and comfortable to inhabit.
Interior designers have to stay on top of the latest trends in home design. They must identify new materials, textures, colors, and patterns that appeal to their clients and give their projects a modern edge. This often involves creative problem-solving and strategic planning.
Interior design is an art. It requires a set of specialized skills combined with artistic vision. It’s not only about creating something that looks good, it’s about making a space that is beautiful, functional, and safe. Interior designers have the rare opportunity to create an environment where people can escape their lives and find a peaceful refuge. It’s a profession that involves creativity, technical skill, and a knowledge of how to make a space work best for its occupants. Read more at https://www.careerexplorer.com/careers/interior-designer
Do you need an interior decorator or interior designer?
Many people are confused about the differences between interior decorators and interior designers. While both professions help create beautiful spaces in the home, there are key distinctions that make it important to understand which one is suitable for your needs.
Interior decorators have the primary focus of creating and arranging decorations and accessories to improve the aesthetic of an interior space. This can include selecting the right paint colors, wallpaper, furniture, lighting fixtures, window treatments, artwork, and rugs to match the overall design and feel of the space. Interior decorators tend to be more budget conscious and less involved in the technical elements of the design such as structural considerations, remodeling, and space planning.
On the other hand, interior designers tend to be much more involved in the design of the space. They consider the structural elements of the project, such as the shape and form of the room, the placement of furniture, and the use of the space. Interior designers are highly knowledgeable about building codes, ventilation, and acoustics, and must be licensed to work in certain areas. They work together with architects, contractors, and other professionals to ensure the space is harmonious and functional.
So when it comes to making a decision on whether to hire an interior decorator or an interior designer, it’s important to consider the scope of the project and what you are hoping to achieve. Do you need someone who can bring color and texture to a space or do you need to make structural changes? Answering these questions can help you determine the best approach for your project. What is interior decorating?
Interior decorating is so much more than just picking out furniture and choosing a paint color. It is a creative and thoughtful process of carefully selecting and combining elements to bring out a certain atmosphere or style to a space. From selecting furniture and fixtures, to deciding on a color palette and texture, to picking artwork and other decorations, each choice a decorator makes plays an integral role in crafting an environment.
The primary purpose of interior decorating is to enhance the look and feel of a space while coordinating with the occupants’ lifestyle and expectations. The process of interior decorating can start with a simple vision or concept, or can involve a detailed plan that considers the demographics, context, and functional requirements of the space. No matter the approach, interior decorating requires an eye for detail and a wealth of experience to ensure that the end result is aesthetically pleasing and comfortable.
The challenge of interior decorating is to bring together all of the components – from furniture and fixtures to colors and aesthetics – and create an environment that meets all of the individual needs of the space. This means listening to the occupants, understanding their style and preferences, researching the latest trends, and having the expertise to create an interior that is both beautiful and unique. Professional interior decorators are artists in their own right, and the results of their work can be truly breathtaking.
Interior decorating is a complex and specialized field that has the potential to truly transform any space. If you’re looking for a way to make your home or business stand out from the crowd, it’s definitely worth considering investing in professional interior decorating services. What training does an interior decorator need?
There's a common misconception that a degree is a necessity in order to be a successful interior decorator. After all, people often turn to degrees and traditional education routes when looking for an entry point into various industries, but can you really be a great decorator without a formal education in design?
In reality, there are plenty of professional decorators out there who have achieved noteworthy success without the need for a degree. Take Emily Henderson, for example, a decorator who's been featured in top magazines and given robust contracts without having pursued a formal design degree. She instead focused on honing her craft and experimenting with her own style, creating a brand and aesthetic that resonates with her clients.
On the other hand, there are some advantages to having a degree in design, from providing access to a greater range of employment opportunities, to giving one a better understanding of certain design principles. A degree can open the door to professional networks and internships which can be beneficial in the long-term, but it's certainly not always necessary.
The truth is, the answer to the question "Can you be a decorator without a degree?" is yes—you absolutely can. Sure, there are some drawbacks to not having a degree in design, such as not having access to certain resources. But yes, it's possible to have a successful career in interior design and decorating without a formal education. What matters most is having an eye for design, a mastery of the basics, and the ability to bring ideas to life. It's the commitment to studying and developing the craft that will truly make or break your career as a decorator. Do decorators need specific credentials?
This is a question that has been discussed for some time, the answer being a resounding yes and no. In the world of interior decoration, credentials are important, but not necessarily the deciding factor for all design projects.
When it comes to interior decoration, expertise comes in many forms, and credentials don’t always guarantee that you’ll receive the best results. As an interior decorator, you need to be well-versed in the principles of design, have a keen eye for detail, and be able to make a space look attractive and inviting. You must also understand your client’s taste and have excellent communication skills. However, credentials do serve as a helpful guide, offering assurance that the decorator possesses the knowledge and experience necessary to transform a space into a dream home.
Credentials serve as a sign of respect in the interior decoration industry. They signify that the decorator has gone through the education and training necessary to be able to professionally design a space. Credentials can include a degree in design, a professional certification, or even an apprenticeship with an established interior decorator. Having these qualities can give a decorator an advantage when bidding on jobs and can help to inspire confidence in a prospective client.
When selecting a decorator for a project, it is important to consider both credentials and experience. While credentials demonstrate education and training, experience provides insight into the ability of the decorator to put those credentials to use in a real-life setting. It is also important to take into account the decorator’s personal style. Ultimately, it is the combination of credentials, experience, and creative vision that will determine the success of a project.
The task of creating a beautiful, functional space requires a unique blend of skills and expertise. Knowing whether or not a decorator has the necessary credentials is an important step in choosing the right individual for the job. In the end, credentials, experience, and creative vision all work together to create an interior design that is as unique and special as the person who inhabits it. Final Thoughts
For four years, I attended Michigan State University and achieved a B.A. in Interior Design with honors, attaining an understanding of design, human factors, and presentation. Narrowly 40 individuals were allowed entrance into the accredited and challenging program known as Human Environment and Design at the time. In addition, I learn from experienced designers online and collaborate in interior designer Facebook groups - all of which, combined with over 9 years of experience in the trade, make Julie Ann Rachelle Interiors LLC an excellent pick for your interior design services.
