Glamorous Master Bedroom Look

For an eDesign Contest through eDesign Tribe (now merged with another company), we were given a real space to design with for the contest, with the floorplan and measurements as shown, and a few photos of the empty room.

Then we were given free reign to design the room based on our ideal client.

Considerations for Decorating a Master Bedroom

While many of us save our bedrooms for last to decorate since they are often private rooms, our bedrooms remain neglected and uninspired.

Yet this is the room in our home that each of us spends the most time in, considering we sleep 8 hours a night.

Do you think you owe it to yourself to give your Master a little love?

Set the Mood

To start, consider what mood do you want to set in this room? How do you want to feel in this room?

  • Serene? Warm? Tranquil?

  • Stylish? Luxe? Humble?

  • Tasteful? Masculine? Feminine?

  • Gender Neutral? Natural? Co-ordinated?

  • Restful? Refined? Textural?

  • Soothing? Graceful? Subdued?

  • Organic? Zen? Comfy?

These are just some of the adjectives that you can strive to set the tone for your room.

Your accessories, colors, and many other choices will be affected by the mood that you wish to create.

Determine Function

  • How is the space going to be used?

  • Who is going to use the space?

  • Does it need to be pet-friendly?

A well-designed space works for all that use it. If it worthless if it is just pretty, and does not function.

Worse, you don’t want to get caught up in making fun selections, only to have to re-do the room in order to make it work properly, wasting time, money, energy, and causing stress.

DETERMINE COLORS & PATTERN PREFERENCES

  • For those using the space, what colors do they prefer, wear often, or gravitate toward?

  • Do you love certain types of patterns that you would like to incorporate? (Such as stripe or plaid)

  • Are there colors/patterns you want to avoid?

  • Are you open to wallpaper? Other wall treatments?

Check out my Color, Wallpaper, and Wall Treatment Pinterest Boards!

Determine Furniture and Accessory Needs/Wants

  • Which items of furniture need to be replaced due to wear?

  • Which items of furniture is on your wishlist?

Which are you willing to change, but could put on hold for now?

  • Which items are staying?

Perhaps it isn’t necessary to start over with all new furnishings. If something is still in good shape, if you still absolutely love it and get joy from it, then there is reason to keep it.

(If it absolutely doesn’t go with the style of the room, perhaps you’ll find a home for it in another room. However, designers often use contrasting styles and design periods to create interest.)

DETERMINE STYLE

There are numerous styles classic and trending, and remember it is okay to mix styles.

Determine Budget

You’re just going have to be in your most zen state of mind, and talk to your spouse about budget.

You don’t want there to be any surprises between the two of you, and this is just part of good communication.

If you need some tips and ideas on how to talk to or approach your spouse/partner/roommate about decorating (etc.), see 4 Decorating Dilemma Hacks You Need to Know Now.

Where does your budget fall?

  • $1,000 - $2,500

  • $2,500 - $5,000

  • $5,000 - $7,500

  • $7,500 - $10,000

  • $10,000 - $15,000

  • $15,000 - $20,000

  • $15,000 - $20,000

  • Other

Keeping these considerations in mind, let’s look at my steps for designing and decorating the Primary Bedroom for the EDesign Tribe Concept Contest.

Inspiration for Styling The Primary Bedroom formerly known as the Master

I have been keeping a Pinterest board with Calming Bedroom Ideas, and that was the main source of my inspiration for this room. I imagined what I would most like if I were to renovate my own bedroom, as I would dearly love to do! This is my Calming Bedroom Ideas Pinterest Board:

I knew I wanted to design in creams, whites, beiges, golds, and then the rich chocolate came as a bonus when I found the bedding.

If you are in need of inspiration for your master bedroom color palette, check out The Paper Source’s Colorscope —> ( Go HERE to download it ).

Each color is assigned to a personality trait and value.

As you can see in the chart, luxe cream, luxe grey, paper bag, antique gold, gravel, and black have fitting descriptions for the mood that I wish to convey in this room.

Luxe Cream: Understated elegance

Luxe Grey: Calm, graceful, harmonious, balanced

Paper Bag: Level-headed

Antique Gold: Strive for the best

Gravel: Sophisticated

Black: Sophistication and worldliness

Primary Bedroom Floor Plan

In selecting furnishings, I provided a nightstand on either side of the bed, which is positioned on the longest wall that is window/door-free.

Not only is this position functional, it is also a positive position for the bed to be located according to Feng Shui. (The main door to the bedroom is the door in the lower right corner of the floor plan.)

By having the bed diagonal (not literally diagonal, but location-wise) to the door to the room, the bed is now located in the “commanding position” according to Feng Shui.

Storage is always important, as you can’t ever have too much storage.

There is a closet (the middle door), however, I also added a Bombay dresser for additional storage needs.

This is positioned along the wall nearest and perpendicular to the entry door.

On the wall with the doors, I positioned a mini-desk that could also double as a vanity if the client wished.

Beneath the window, I placed an accent table with two identical chairs on either side for conversation, relaxation, reading, etc.

Finally, I placed a bench at the foot of the bed to be used while getting dressed.

In this floor plan, the chandelier in the middle of the room didn’t render, however there is a chandelier centered over the bed.

I added wall sconces on either side of the mirror that is above the mini-desk.

Each nightstand has a lamp, as well as a nearby swinging arm sconce for reading.

The floor lamp sits behind one of the chairs, and I finish the lighting plan with picture lights over the artwork.

A light grey area rug grounds the room, with a faux zebra cowhide rug placed under the chairs and table for extra panache.

Looking into the bedroom from the doorway, you can (barely) see in the lower left-hand corner the mini-desk and its accompanying chair. Just above it, you get a glimpse of one of the wall sconces that go on either side of the mirror sitting above the mini-desk.

In the lower right corner, you see the bombay dresser with a bouquet of roses sitting on it.

To the left of the dresser are two plants.

In the center of the room is the area rug, with the bed centered over it, and a matching nightstands with matching lamps on either side.

Above the bed is a framed photographic print titled, “Snowing” by Jovana Rikalo.

On the walls, you see Cheetah Leopard Gold Wallpaper, with white baseboards, and moldings.

The window is made to look larger and more glamorous with a custom window treatment.

Underneath the window is an antique accent table accompanied by two deconstructed club chairs. Each chair has a black monogrammed pillow with white welting around the edges.

A bouquet of roses and picture frames accessorize the small table. A tripod floor lamp and a potted plant sit behind the chair on the right.

A Brazilian zebra cowhide rug unites the seating arrangement.

A flush mount light cluster gives a nod to Mid Century Modern design, while the wall sconces over the bed that I’ve sourced have a telescoping feature.
