Real Life Examples of These Essential French Country Bedroom Elements:
1.Blue Gingham and Floral Patterns
French country bedrooms are all about creating an airy, feminine touch that instantly evokes romance.
To achieve this charming look, incorporate repeating floral patterns into your quilts, curtains, pillows, and wall art.
Soft textures like velvet, lace, and sheer fabrics can also add a layer of warmth and invite a cozy atmosphere.
Don’t be afraid to mix and match these elements until you find the perfect balance for your bedroom.
Take a cue from “Chambre Audrey,” featured on @provencepoiriers blog—a stunning example of French country style.
Le Mas des Poiriers, a luxury family home rental, has been highlighted by Veranda, Town & Country, Brides, Fortune, and People magazines, showcasing its quintessential French country charm.
Erin from @betweentheporches shared this room for Wallpaper Wednesday, and I couldn’t agree more—the floral wallpaper in the nook truly elevates the space! Imagine booking this delightful room for a relaxing getaway.
Follow Le Mas des Poirers @provencepoiriers for more gorgeous images of their property.

Blue gingham is a hallmark of French Country style, beautifully complementing crisp white walls and clean white bedding. French country design is inspired by pastoral life, bringing a sense of the countryside into your home.
Pastoral Mood: Embrace a serene, rural vibe.
Floral Patterns in Wallpaper: Perfect for adding character and charm.
White Walls: Create a bright, airy foundation.
Wood Floors: Add warmth and natural beauty.
Feminine Touches: Soft, elegant details that enhance the room’s allure.
Toile is another popular pattern in French Country style. Here’s a fun fact: Ireland invented toile in the 1750s but it was soon in demand in France, where it became known as toiles de Jouy. "Toile" means "cloth" in French, and Jouy was a town near Versailles renowned for fabric production.

Another Example of Gingham in French Country Style
Above, a bedroom from Château de Morsan, a spectacular French fortress nestled in the forests of Normandy, showcases another elegant use of gingham.
This room highlights the charming matchy-matchy gingham pattern, beautifully contrasted with red and white floral bed hangings (a la Polonaise in French).
This juxtaposition adds a vibrant touch, demonstrating how different patterns can work together to create a cohesive and visually appealing space.

It’s an affordable way to create a unique, personalized look. Kathy from @r.house shares fantastic DIY tips on crafting your own antique wall panel light sconces—check out the caption next to the image above for more details.

3. Wrought Iron Accents
Choose antique wooden four- or five-poster beds, rustic armoires, and elegant dressers with curved legs to capture the essence of French Country style.
Add in humble nightstands and other period-inspired pieces to complete the look.
To bring in a touch of rustic charm, mix these items with wrought iron accents—it's a perfect blend of elegance and rusticity that defines this timeless style.
At first glance of the image below, you might see a flurry of ruffles and gold details.
However, a closer look reveals the expert touch of designer James Howard, who masterfully balances these elements to create a harmonious and sophisticated space.
This design understands the allure of a flounce but knows exactly when to pull back, creating a space that feels romantic yet refined.
Take note of the simple yet impactful use of wrought iron in both the bed and the chandelier. This choice adds a touch of rustic charm while maintaining the elegance of the overall design.

Take, for example, the chest of drawers highlighted by @mudpaint. Its weathered blue finish, gilded moldings, and hand-painted pastoral scene create a beautiful contrast that draws the eye and sparks the imagination.

Lacy, gauzy textiles
Weathered woods
Daybeds
Each of these elements can help you create a serene and charming space that feels both timeless and welcoming.
6. Welcome Natural Textures & Elements
Adding texture to your space can truly transform its look and feel. One fantastic way to do this is with painted brick or a charming German Smear finish. This technique adds a rustic, lived-in appeal that feels both cozy and stylish.
Image: @simplyfrenchmarket
To add even more romantic charm to the room, opt to hang French or Belgian style lace panels. (Or in my case, Irish crocheted linens.)
For a touch of romantic charm, consider hanging lace panels. French or Belgian styles are timeless, but in my own home, I cherish the warmth of Irish crocheted linens.
Lightweight sheers are another beautiful addition. They let in an abundance of natural sunlight, creating an inviting and cozy ambiance that's perfect for unwinding. Take inspiration from @simplyfrenchmarket’s stunning bedroom above, which showcases how natural textures can enhance a space beautifully.
Discover These Textural French Country Enhancements:
Cotton Duvet Cover: Soft and breathable, perfect for adding a natural, cozy feel to your bed.
DIY German Smear, Limewash, or Painted Brick: These techniques add character and a unique texture to your walls.
Painted wood floor: A simple yet effective way to introduce warmth and texture underfoot.
Incorporating natural textures isn't just about aesthetics; it's about creating a space that feels welcoming and lived-in. From my experience, blending different textures like soft cottons and rugged bricks can create a balanced and harmonious look. Think about how these elements will interact with the natural light in your room to create the perfect sanctuary.

Elements of French Country Style in Mysha’s Room
The essence of French Country style lies in its embrace of natural textures and elements. Think wood floors, brick walls, and wooden beams. Mysha’s modern take on this classic style features a stunning wrought iron canopy bedframe, adding both elegance and a touch of rustic charm.
One of the standout features in Mysha’s design is the unique wall treatment. She combines a herringbone brick pattern with a vertical border, topped with an offset brick design. This blend of patterns adds depth and interest to the room, showcasing the beauty of natural materials.
The graceful, curving lines of the night tables and the serene blue accents throughout the space create a harmonious and tranquil environment. These thoughtful details are what make French Country style so timeless and appealing.

When you combine different materials and patterns, like Mysha does, you bring a unique character and warmth to your home.

7. Graceful Curving Lines

French country bedrooms embrace graceful curves and natural elements that create a timeless, inviting atmosphere.
Think about incorporating pieces like curvaceous headboards, woven baskets, and poufs made from rich leather and supple hide.
These textures add depth and a sense of history, making you feel like you’ve stepped into a charming countryside retreat.
I came across this lovely image (above) on the Hello Lovely blog, which highlighted the book "Giannetti PATINA HOMES: Ultimate Beauty and Timeless Architecture." The homes featured in this volume are the epitome of elegance, timelessness, and unique character.
Some might look at this bedroom by @adams.and.elm.home above and think it looks more traditional, however, I think it’s a great example of French Country style.
Nancy from @adams.and.elm.home uses a black and white palette that leans towards Farmhouse style, but mixing styles can actually make a room more interesting. The key is to maintain a unified color palette or cohesive details to tie the composition together seamlessly.
Follow Nancy @adams.and.elm.home for DIY home inspiration.
Here are some elements of French Country style that she beautifully showcases:
Graceful curves in the headboard, nightstand, and even the lampstand’s silhouette.
The floral pattern on the pillows, which adds a touch of French Country charm.
A classic bust on the nightstand, adding an elegant focal point.
A romantic bed cover that completes the look with a soft, inviting touch.
8. Fresh Flowers
I can just imagine having coffee or even breakfast in bed here in this room by Rosella Leone from @rosaleone912.
This dreamy scenario is brought to life by Rosella Leone's stunning design from @rosaleone912. Flowers like lavender and roses are quintessential to French Country style, adding that touch of elegance and charm.
Picture yourself in a quaint cottage in the French countryside, opening the door to a sea of lavender. The key to capturing this essence is to use fresh blooms and greenery that appear as if they were just plucked from the garden outside. Opt for flowers that flourish in the same regions where this style originates, such as sunflowers, irises, and poppies. These blooms not only add beauty but also evoke a sense of effortless, natural style.
Creating a French country-themed bedroom involves embracing the simplicity and charm of the countryside. Think of light, airy fabrics like voile, cotton, or linen for curtains, throw blankets, and quilts. These materials add a soft, romantic touch to your space. Accessories, such as bedside lamps with decorative shades, can significantly influence the room's ambiance. White lace lamp shades, for instance, can introduce a touch of elegance without overpowering the room.

9. Subtle Color Palette
When it comes to capturing the essence of French Country style, embrace a palette of soft, muted colors. Stick to whites, gentle creams, powder blues, and light taupes. These shades create a serene and inviting atmosphere. Don’t overlook the power of accessories—lightweight tufted rugs add a touch of comfort underfoot, and gingham curtains bring that quintessential French charm, as demonstrated below.
Plus, didn’t we already say that florals are everything? Add pastel colored flowers throughout your room for a bright pop of color (and all the happiness).

(Above) Ok, this isn’t a residential bedroom, as it comes from an iconic hotel. All the same, there are many details you can copy for your home. Pay attention to elements like the nightstand lamp and the elegant wall moldings. The harmonious blend of white, green, pink pastels, and gold is beautifully offset by the red border of the rug, adding a layer of visual interest.

Amy with @masondemings shows us the casual side of French country style with cozy bedding.

10. Worn Surfaces
French Country style is a more casual type of decorating, one where it is okay to get the paint chipped, and allow the wear to show on the furniture, all part of the charm.
For this reason, Shabby Chic style plays well with French Country. Incorporating natural materials such as wood, iron, and stone can also be a great way to enhance the decor and add warmth to the room. Characteristics of the French country bedroom style include vintage furniture pieces with curved legs, shutters on windows, and exposed wooden beams or posts on ceilings. For example, classic wicker furniture with distressed finishes or rustic iron bed frames helps bring an old-world charm to any room. Adding in antique wall mirrors and ornamental chandeliers that are delicately detailed makes a perfect addition to your French country bedroom to give it a complete look.

11. Decorative Moldings On Furniture, Cabinets, And Walls
Investing in quality pieces and being mindful of the materials you choose for your French country bedroom are essential for creating a cozy and inviting home that has a timeless feel. Pieces with carefully chosen details will bring together the classic yet modern, rustic and exquisite all in one space.

“Why it works: The French tend toward an inborn sense of taste and refinement that keeps this unassuming style from feeling pedestrian.
Guided by instinct and a knack for striking a balance, French country décor always finds its center, no matter how many disparate elements you throw into the mix.
It marries an old-world sensibility with an edge of sophistication that keeps it perennially fresh.” 2

12. Gauzy Curtains
To perfectly finish off a French country style bedroom, incorporate delicate draperies or sheer curtains to the windows and door openings.
This helps you achieve that airy and whimsical look with an added texture boost.
Be sure to play around with different soft fabrics and billowy styles, such as floor-length panels.
Opt for neutral colors like white or ivory to provide an inviting atmosphere, or choose pale blues or greens to keep within the French theme.
To add even more romantic charm to the room, opt to hang French or Belgian style lace panels.
These textured curtains bring a little shabby chic flair with a traditional feel that perfectly complements the French countryside look.
Sheers also allow plenty of sunlight to fill your bedroom, providing an inviting and cozy ambiance.
Finish up with gilded rods or vintage-inspired holders for the panels and your look is complete!

13. Bed Canopy
Add subtle touches of French country design to the bedroom by creating contrast with colors. The bed canopy utilizes a contrasting welt of teal to the pink floral fabric. Pops of teal and turquoise create a look that’s practically straight out of Provence.

Literally translated as "Polish bed," this bed type originated in France and was named that because the drapery on the side, on the canopy, and even on the posts reminded the French of Polish dress.
At one time, rich patrons of mansions and palaces had grand beds like this one in their bedrooms. In many cases, these people received visitors in bed as they were preparing for the day. Stunning pieces of furniture such as these impressed visitors and reinforced the sense of importance of the owner.
14. Chandeliers
Hang rustic yet delicate chandeliers to complete your space and create an elegant atmosphere.
Adding in ornamental chandeliers that are delicately detailed makes a perfect addition to your french country bedroom to give it a complete look.
However, if you’re wanting to go for bolder designs, incorporate ornate chandeliers with gold accents into the room’s lighting system.

People Also Ask:
If French Country out of style?
French Country is not one of those trendy styles you must worry about. This type of furniture is very versatile and can fit into any room. It also adds warmth and character to a space.
When French Country style is done right, it will never go out of style. The origins of this classic style are so steeped in history, that only a few minor changes might be needed to update to a more modern look. A change in pillows and accents is the most affordable way to update any look.
In America, the traditional colors of red, yellow, and blue together might make a French Country room look dated. If that is what brings you the most joy, though, I say go for it!
What colors are popular for French Country bedrooms?
In America, French Country is characterized by neutral colors. If you don't know where to start, select a warm white. You want your color palette to stick to 4-5 hues. Next, pick several additional neutrals such as cream, linen, gray, taupe, chocolate, or black.
If you must have color, I recommend hints of pastels or tones of blue or lavender. (Think Rachel Ashwell Shabby Chic, which plays very well with French Country.)
History: American French Country style of the 1980's involved colors such as red, blue and yellow together often featuring roosters.
What is the difference between French Country and French Provincial Styles?
First of all, one need not worry about mixing French Country and French Provincial together. Using too much of one certain design movement can make a room dull. Although many (including myself, guilty!) often use these two terms interchangeably, there is a difference between French Country style and French Provincial. There is also differences in these styles depending on if you are in America or actually in France.
French Country style is a more casual style. It is characterized by its use of natural materials such as wood, stone, wicker and wrought iron. It also tends to incorporate elements of traditional European design, including floral motifs and other decorative accents. Keywords: relaxed, simple, welcoming.
French Provincial style is a more elegant style. There is less of a focus on rustic, instead honing in on luxury. Housedigest.com tells us to imagine a mix of "coastal minimal' and "French Regency" to achieve a ritzier style than French Country. French Provincial furniture often features intricate carvings and gilding. The colors and patterns are bolder than it's cousin French Country. Keywords: formal, fru-fru, glamorous.
Final Thoughts
Creating a French country bedroom should be a calming and whimsical process.
Whether you’re a fan of bold blues, delicate floral prints, or the cozy and airy effect of white-washed woods, you can easily incorporate the charming elements of a French Country-style bedroom.
With the right accessories, furniture, and wall colors, you can easily make your bedroom look like it's been plucked out of a classic French countryside.
By combining beautiful blooms, antique pieces, natural textures, and a subtle color palette, you can create a timeless and romantic bedroom.
From canopies to chandeliers, all these elements can be used to create the perfect romantic bedroom makeover.
Don’t forget to ask yourself the Marie Kondo question, “Does this bring me joy?” as you incorporate these 14 essential French Country decorating ideas.
